Head Coach: Rob Nucci (23rd Season / Raritan: 439-127 / Career: 457-152)
A-Central / CJG2 / District 19 / Region 5
Where They Open: 12/15 at RBC
Opening Tournament: Ron Mazzola Memorial at Old Bridge
Head coach Rob Nucci enters his 23rd, and final, season as the head coach of the Raritan Rockets. Coach Nucci, who enters 2024 with 457 career wins (439 at Raritan and 18 at Pinelands), won't be going too far though, as he will remain in the program as the coach down at the middle school. In his final run with the team, he'll have a lineup that must replace seven starters from last year's Sectional Championship team, but does return some big time talent in which the Rockets can begin their rebuild around.
The teeth of the lineup lies in the middle with seniors Zach Reilley and Logan Acevedo, and junior Alex Delaurier leading the charge. Reilley, who will continue his career at Long Island University next season, was 5th in the state last season, and was also a Shore Conference Tournament, District 20, and Region 5 champion. He enters his final season needing just 14 wins to reach career victory #100. Acevedo won 23 matches in 2023, and placed 3rd at Districts. After an injury brought his freshman season to abrupt end just ten matches in, Delaurier had an outstanding comeback season, winning a District title, and advancing to Atlantic City after placing 4th at Regions.
Senior Aidan Davis won 25 matches in 2023, and was a 3rd place finisher at Districts, and took 6th at Regions. Junior Nick Sheldrick notched 19 victories, was 2nd at Districts, and also finished 6th at Regions. That pair provides a steady presence down low, where the Rockets will be breaking in some new faces to the lineup.
Jon Gazerwitz, a senior, and junior Riyan Bhutto anchor the upperweights. Gazerwitz was 3rd in the District last year, while Bhutto finished 4th. Those two, along with senior Nick O'Beirne, who saw some action in the varsity lineup with ten matches under his belt last year, will help break in several new faces to the varsity fold.
The Rockets have some strong individual talent that are going to have very big seasons, and should have deep postseason runs. There's a lot of newcomers that need to be broken into the lineup though, so there will be a heavy emphasis on getting the newcomers to keep improving with every outing. It's a lineup that should be a lot tougher as the season rolls on. A-Central continues to get tougher each season, and the Rockets jump right into the divisional slate by opening with RBC, who might not be the team they will eventually be as some of the footballers will most likely not be available yet. Five days after that, the Rockets will welcome 2-time defending division champ, St John Vianney, into the Launch Pad. The Rockets are going to be tested, early, and often, and again, the hope here is that this team as a whole is peaking as we hit the team and individual postseason.
