Simply put, Rumson is loaded. That's it. That's the lead.
106-132: We'll start with the senior in this group, Julian DuQue. A District runner-up in 2022, an injury cost him the final month of the 2023 season. He was 11-3 on the year, with his only losses coming to State qualifiers, including State Champion Anthony Knox of SJV. There's a trio of sophomores who were all in the starting lineup for the Bulldogs last year in Joaquin Duque, Andrew Newell, and Eamon Fry. Fry, was a 26-match winner, and was the District 18 Champ at 106. He was a win away from Atlantic City, finishing in 5th place at Regions. Rumson picked up a big addition with the arrival of junior Elijah Bayne, who transferred in from Oregon, where he was a 2-time State Champion.
138-157: Junior Cole Pangborn punched a ticket to AC last season after placing 3rd at Regions. He's a 2-time District runner-up, and has put up 50 wins in his first two seasons. Fellow junior Walker Skove enters his third season in the starting lineup for Rumson. He was a 3rd place finisher at Districts in 2022. Freshman Sonny Amato is a big addition to the lineup. Amato joins the roster after an outstanding career at the youth level, winning a National Championship at the NHSCA Tournament back in March, as well as Intermediate State and Cadet Championships. He should be among the top freshmen in the Shore, and state, this season.
165-Hwt: Hudson Skove is back for one more go. The Harvard-bound Skove became the program's first State Champion last season. In addition to reaching the top of the podium at Boardwalk Hall, Skove won his 2nd Region Title & District championships, a Shore Conference Tournament title, and was 2nd place at the Beast of the East. He enters his final season wit 85 career victories. Also back up top for the Bulldogs are juniors Matt Smith and Evan Ridgway, a 2-time District medal winner, senior Christian Cady, and sophomore Luke Dougherty, who could be set for a big season after showing great potential during his freshman season.
Six years ago, Rumson lost their final dual of the season with just eight wrestlers in the lineup to finish off a 2-20 season. Since then, the program has been rising and rising, and is now looking like one of the Shore's top programs this season. Is it too early to circle the date on this one yet? Wednesday night, January 24th, Rumson at St John Vianney.
