Where They Open: 12/16 - Beast of the East

The Lancers are loaded. I don't think I broke any news there.

Leading the charge is junior Anthony Knox. Currently ranked #1 in the nation at his weight on MatScouts and #9 in the pound-for-pound rankings, the Cornell-commit is making his case to eventually go down as the Shore Conference's all-time greatest. The resume, so far, is 2-time State Champion, 2-time Region Champion, 2-time District Champion, Shore Conference Tournament Champion, Beast of the East Champion, Sam Cali Champion, Escape The Rock Champion... not too shabby.

As for the rest of the returners, you have junior Patrick O'Keefe, a 2-time State medal winner (8th in 2023 & 2nd in 2022), 2-time Region & 2-time District Champ, and was a Shore Conference Tournament runner-up . Fellow juniors Jake Zaltsman & Cole Stangle are both 2-time District Champs and 2-time State Qualifiers.

Sophomore Matt Gould won 27 matches and was a District Champ, Region runner-up, and took 8th in Atlantic City as a freshman last season. Gould also took 2nd at the Shore Conference Tournament. Fellow sophomore John Saraiva won 19 matches, was 4th at the Shore Conference Tournament, and was a District runner-up.

Seniors Ryan Buchanan and Luca Minardo are also returning starters and look to man the 215-Hwt slots, while fellow senior Ryan Cawley was the starting 175-pounder in 2022.

It would be a solid group if we left it at that, but then there's the newcomers to the roster. Junior Dezmond Lenaghan has transferred in from Donovan Catholic. Lenaghan is a 2-time State Qualifier, and was 3rd at the Shore Conference Tournament last season. There's a swarm of talented freshmen coming, as well. Bubba Gavrish was a runner-up in the last year's Intermediate State Tournament, while Jacob Feinstein placed 4th. Julian Zargo was a runner-up in the 2022 tournament, and Riley Correal has also had an outstanding run at the middle school level.

The Lancers dropped a heartbreaker in last year's Non-Public Group B Finals, and are no doubt chomping at the bit to get back there this season. There's obviously a long way to go before we get there, though. SJV has a solid December tournament slate with a trip to the Beast of the East and the Sam Cali Memorial. There's the A-Central foes as Vianney looks to successfully to defend their title, and non-conference meetings with other non-public powers like Bergen Catholic and St Peter's Prep.

It's going to be another exciting year to see what the Lancers can do, but just a quick note here: There isn't a senior in the lineup until you get to 190. The Lancers might be pretty good next year, as well.
