2025 Matawan Huskies

Head Coach:
Matt Hughes (4th Season)
Assistants: Sean Neely, Mike Castro, Johnny Short, Andy Lasko
2024 Record: 5-19

With just a handful of seniors in the room, the Huskies will be putting a pretty young team on the mat this season. The good news is that despite the youth, it is not a group devoid of experience. 25 non-seniors saw varsity action last year, and there are some talented freshmen coming into the room after strong runs at the Intermediate School level.

Senior Colin Palumbo leads the charge for the Huskies. Palumbo is a 2-time District Champion, and has advanced to Atlantic City each of the last two seasons. Palumbo enters the season with 77 career wins, needing 23 more victories to become the 7th Husky to reach the century mark in career wins. He's a part of an upperweight group that includes sophomores Peter Brown and JJ Oshin, who will be looking to build off the experience gained from seeing significant time in the lineup as freshmen, and the 1-2 punch of senior Metin Metioglu and junior Mohammad Targali at 215/Hwt, both of who placed 3rd at Districts in 2024. Targali, a 26-bout winner last year who finished 5th at the Shore Conference Tournament, has the potential to emerge as one of the top heavies in the Shore this season.

Alexander Liss, a 2-time District medalist, advanced to Atlantic City in 2024 after a 3rd-place finish at Regions. The junior has put up 51 wins in his first two seasons, and looks to be the anchor in the middleweights for the Huskies. Former regulars, senior Mark Wicinski and junior Antonio Bruno both return to the lineup after missing last season to add some more experience to the middle.

Down low, returning lettermen Andrew Martin, Andre Martin, and Dean Cuiffo (4th at Districts), all sophomores, are the "veterans" of what should be a very young group of lightweights. Several freshmen will be competing for spots in the starting lineup here. Among them are Dylan Sierra, who placed 7th at Intermediate States last season.

There is some solid proven individual talent here, and a few guys with the ability to really breakthrough this year. Enough so that the Huskies should be able to improve upon their win total from a season ago.
