2024 Record: 11-11
The numbers are up this year for the Eagles, with a combination of a lot of returners from last season's team, and a strong freshmen class with a lot of potential.
Junior Ryan Willi was tied for the team lead in wins in 2024, posting 32 victories on his way to finishing 3rd at Districts and 6th in the Region. Willi, along with returning starter Dan Smith, a senior, will help anchor the middle of the lineup with a group that picked up some varsity experience last year and will be looking to step up in full time roles this season.
The lower portion of the lineup could be a strength for South. Sophomore Ryan Romano and junior Ben Smolensky were both 20+ match winner last season, and junior Joseph Veniskey and senior Hudson Bernabeo both put up double-digit win seasons in 2024. Those four give head coach Matt Rosner a nice base to build around as several underclassmen will be looking to get into the lineup, including members of the freshmen class that includes some promising talent like Peter Trezza, an Intermediate States medalist last season.
Up top, Liam Brett was a District medal winner in his rookie campaign, and should be a strong presence in the upper part of the lineup. Fellow sophomore Thomas Gelpke fared well last year as a freshman competing at 215 & heavyweight, and will once again partner up with senior James Sanzio to man the 215/Hwt slots.
With the improved numbers, fueled by that promising freshmen class, the Eagles are putting the work in. They have a full 28-dual schedule, and there will be a heavy focus on getting experience for the previous backups and the newcomers as they battle for starting spots.
