The Eagles took a pretty decent hit to graduation, including four 20+ match winners, but still return some very strong talent from last year's Top 10 11 E-Division Championship team, and have a lot of underclassmen looking to step into the lineup and keep things rolling.
Sophomore Peter Trezza leads the lowerweights. Trezza is coming off an outstanding debut season that saw him lead the team in wins with 34 on his way to making it to Atlantic City after finishing 2nd at both Districts and Regions. Juniors Robert Sprague and Daniel Alexandre will be looking to build off the experience gained from last season, as will sophomores Liam O'Reilly, Ryder Hartman, and Robert Cook, who will be joined by a promising group of freshmen that will be looking to contribute down low.
There is a lot of depth in the stretch from 132-144, so there will likely be some spreading out in the duals to lengthen the overall lineup. Junior Ryan Romano won 25 matches last year and took 3rd at Districts, while fellow juniors John McCormack and Tyler Kroll, seniors Ben Smolensky and Tyler Alweiss, and sophomore Max Alweiss were all .500 or better last year.
Ryan Willi is the anchor in the upperweights. The senior, who will attend the Virginia Military Institute next year, won 30 bouts last year and advanced to AC after finishing 4th at Regions. Along with junior Liam Brett, it gives South a couple of returning upperclassmen starters to provide leadership in what will be an otherwise new group of starters in the uppers.
South is coming off a huge year for the program with a school record 24 dual wins, a divisional title, and a final ranking in the Top 10 11. This group is looking ahead though and is focused on continuing to put the work in to keep the wins coming. They've bumped up to the D-Division this year and should be right in the thick of the team race.
