Perhaps no team was hit harder by graduation in the state than St John Vianney, as six State medal winners have moved on, including the Shore Conference's first, and only, 4-time State Champ. Still, while a lot of teams didn't lose six State medalists to graduation, not a lot return six State qualifiers either.

The upper half of the lineup features four wrestlers that wrestled at Boardwalk Hall last March. Junior Bubba Gavrish, who committed to wrestle at Columbia in two years, made his first trip to Atlantic City last season, and came home with a 7th-place medal. Seniors Abe Amoako, Thomas Foley, and John Saraiva, who was also a Region Champion last year, all made it to AC as well last year, and give coach Chris Notte a strong veteran core to break some new starters into the upperweights around.

Down low, senior Matt Gould, who is Lock Haven bound after this season, is a 2-time State medalist, placing 8th in 2023 and 2024. He'll be looking to cap his career with another trip to the podium, but first will provide a strong senior presence in a lowerweight group that also has returning starters Julian Zargo, a State qualifier last season, and Riley Correal, both juniors, back in the fold.

The losses to graduation were indeed heavy, but there is still a ton of familiar talent back, and some of the holdovers that were stuck behind the hammers from last year on the depth chart will be looking to emerge. Iron sharpens iron, and there is a tough, competitive room at Vianney, so you know this team is still going to be tough. Sometimes, the best teams are the ones that wrestle with a chip on their shoulder, which could be the case if there are people out there doubting the Lancers.
