Where They Open
Beast of the East
While CBA's 2021 season saw them end Howell's 15-year run with at least a share of the A-North Title, by claiming their first outright divisional title in program history, and also featured a successful individual postseason with three Colts winning State Medals, the Colts should be even better in 2022. There's a wealth of talent from last year's team returning, and some key newcomers, that will have the Colts gunning for big things.
Down low, the Colts will be led by senior Garrett Totten. Totten, who enters the season needing 11 victories to reach 100 career wins, is a 2-time State Medalist, finishing 7th in both 2020 & 2021. Another State Medalist returning down low for CBA is sophomore Alex Nini, who took 8th at States at 113-pounds last season. Senior Vin Principe is a 4-year starter, who participated in his 2nd Region Tournament last year. He finished 5th in Region 6 in 2020. Another senior, Anthony Dimitri, has seen some action in each of the last two seasons, and will be looking to step up with a bigger role in his final year. Sophomore Tyler Venet will be looking to build upon the experience he received last year as a starter at 106 for the Colts. There's a solid group of freshmen that will be looking to crack the lineup and contribute as well, among them is AJ Falcone, a State Medalist at the youth level.
CBA is anchored in the middle by the junior trio of Julian George, Tyler Barrett, and Zander Silva. The shortened season of 2021 is going to damper the overall numbers a little bit, but for now, this trio has combined for 2 District Titles, 3 District Medals, 2 Region Titles, 5 Region Medals, 5 State Tournament appearances, and 1 State Medal (George finished 8th last season), and have gone a combined 138-39 through their first two seasons together.
This year's upperweights she be a pretty solid group, and could be as tough as CBA has had in quite some time. Junior Nick Stump, a Region Qualifier last year, and a District runner-up in 2020, kicks things off at 165. At 175, junior Anthony Lawrence arrives from Toms River East, where he advanced to the Region 7 Tournament in each of his first two seasons with the Raiders. A trio of returning starters fill the run from 195-Hwt, with juniors Peter Grippo and Rob Canterino, and Taig Sheehy all back from last year's squad.
As mentioned, 2021 was a big year for the Colts as they claimed their first outright A-North crown, while ending rival Howell's run at the top. The two will meet up this season fairly early, as the Colts visit the Rebels on January 5th. Both teams must also deal with Middletown South in the division hunt, and the Colts will host the Eagles on 1/12. As for the rest of the schedule, the Colts have loaded it up. They open at the Beast of the East, and will participate in the Escape The Rock Tournament in mid-January. As for the duals outside of A-North, some interesting meets on the slate include road trips to State powers: Bergen Catholic & St. Peter's Prep, and a dual against Council Rock South at Rutgers University, prior to the Scarlet Knights hosting Indiana on January 7th.
