That trio will be joined in Atlantic City by freshman Tanner Hodgins, who took 3rd at 165, and senior Dane Colfer, who finished 4th at 215.

A-North / CJG5 / District 18 / Region 5

Where They Open: 12/14 vs Marlboro
Opening Tournament: 12/16 - Beast of the East & Paulsboro Tournament (split)

With the exception of the abbreviated Covid season in 2021, Howell has had at least 20 dual wins every year since 2006. While they lost some key wrestlers to graduation, including State medalist DJ Henry, a pair of State qualifiers in Kieran Bruen and Gavin Merkel, and heavyweight Thomas Richards, a 27-match winner, few teams have shown the ability to reload the way the Rebels have under the Shore Conference's all-time winningest coach, John Gagliano.

As per the norm, the Rebels have their usual mix of established stars, talented freshmen, and next man up depth wrestlers replacing departed starters without the team missing a beat. A trio of those established stars returning potentially fall in the 132-144 range in seniors Sebastian Ortega and Giovanni Scafidi, and junior Xavier Ortega. Sebastian, who will be continuing his career at Princeton next year, enters the season with 76 career wins. A 2-time District Champion, Sebastian is a 3-time State qualifier and placed 5th as a freshman in 2021. Sebastian's brother, Xavier, has 71 victories in his first two seasons, and is the first Howell wrestler in program history to win District & Region titles in each of his first two seasons. Like the Ortega brothers, Scafidi is also a 2-time District Champion. He's a 3-time State qualifier, having finished 2nd at Regions in each of his three seasons, and has an outside shot of hitting 100 career wins this year as he enters the season with 59 victories.

Another veteran returning for the Rebels in the middle of the lineup is senior JJ Machnik, a 27-bout winner who finished 2nd in D22, and placed 6th at Regions at 138.

Up top, senior Dane Colfer is the most experienced of the group. Colfer is a 2-time District medalist, who placed 6th in the Region last year at 215. He can provide some veteran leadership as the Rebels break in some new starters in the uppwerweights. Among the newcomers up here, keep an eye on freshman Tanner Hodgins, who finished in 5th-place at the Intermediate States last season, and was also a champion at the Tulsa Nationals in the 15U group back in January.

Junior Mason Hultman and sophomore Tony Lourido are the most experienced of the group down low. Expect a lot of competition for the  lineup spots down here the returners, the aforementioned depth guys, and a promising incoming group of freshmen that includes Luke Johnston, who placed 6th at Intermediate States in 2022.

There's a good mix of both talented youth and veterans to this year's roster. The early dates on the schedule, including the opportunity to avenge last season's opening night loss to Middletown South on the 20th, will be very important to break in some of the newcomers to the lineup before the Rebels hit a particularly tough/key 7-day span in mid-January that includes a trip to Jackson Memorial, a divisional match with a very tough Middletown North, and the crack at defending A-North champ CBA. Other notable dates on the schedule include a home dual vs. defending Group 2 champion, High Point, and road trips to Old Bridge and Watchung Hills, as well as the Moorestown Duals, which should have the Rebels plenty tested once they hit February and look to successfully defend their CJG5 Sectional title.
