Where They Open
12/18: Robin Leff Tournament at Southern Regional
Four seniors that qualified for the Regions last season graduated, but the Jags still have a lot returning from last season's team, and some impact newcomers, and look to have a great balance throughout the entire lineup.
The lowerweights have the potential to be a very strong group. Junior Lucas LiPari is a 2-time Region qualifier, and was a District runner-up in 2020. Sophomore Jason Seda also advanced to the Regions last season, and was part of a very talented group of freshmen 106-pounders in the Shore last season. Back at 106 this year, he could be primed for a very big season. Senior, Andrew Cennamo is the veteran of the lowerweights, having been a part of the varsity lineup since his freshman year. He could be set up to have a big final run in last season for the Jags. The group also has several newcomers to the lineup looking to make a big impact. Among the new faces are the Espinoza twins, Jonathan and Luis, sophomores who were at Jackson Liberty last season, fellow sophomore Joseph Weikel, and junior Nikko Rucci.
The middle of the lineup is kicked off by senior George Ebid, who enters his 3rd season in the starting lineup for the Jags. We got a little glimpse at the potential of sophomore Cael Huxford during last year's shortened season. He has a chance to be a real standout in the middle of the lineup. Junior Luke Hamann is a 3rd-year starter who is battle tested. He has faced some very stiff competition in the lineup for Jackson in his first two seasons, and is another candidate to have a breakout season. Another junior back for the Jags is Quinn Bohringer, who jumped out to a 3-0 start last season before having his season ended due to injury.
Up top, Mike Rauch leads the charge in the upperweights. The senior is a 2-time Region Qualifier, and was a District Champion in 2020. Junior, Paul Novello, and seniors Nick Afanador, and Ryan Noble are looking to build off their first seasons in the varsity lineup, after working under that talented group of senior upperweights the Jags had in 2020. They'll be looking to step up and mark their mark in the lineup with their first opportunity with a full season.
The Jags are going to be a very interesting team to watch. They had a lot of young guys in the lineup last year that could have really benefitted from a full season with the Jags' usual brutal schedule. Still, it's a team that ALWAYS works hard in the room and puts in the work in the offseason and in the clubs. The schedule is once again loaded, kicking off with the Robin Leff Tournament at Southern, the A-South slate, non-division matches with Howell, Raritan, Wall, Rumson, and Lacey, non-conference meets with Cherokee, Seton Hall, and Camden Catholic, and more. The goals remain high as well, as Jackson will look to bid for the top spot in A-South, and a bid for a Sectional Title in a very tough CJG4 field that includes rival Brick Memorial and a loaded Middletown South team.
