2022 Eagles Wrestling

Head Coach
Anton Atterbury - 6th Season (Career Record: 61-30)

Where They Open
12/17: TCNJ Pride Tournament at Middletown South

Expectations and goals are high, and for good reason. The Eagles look to be loaded.

Down low, the Eagles are led by junior Jack Zaleski, a 2-time State Medalist, placing 5th in 2020, and 4th in 2021. He gives South an absolute hammer down low, and if it weren't for the shortened season last year, he'd likely be hitting 100 career wins just one month into his junior season. Seniors, Ryan Madden and Kaden King, split duties at 113 during last year's abbreviated season, but should rack up the wins this season at 113 & 120. Madden was 10-1 in his first varsity season in 2020, while King racked up 19 wins that year. Sophomore Zach Veniskey is looking to build off the experience gained from last year, returning in the 106-slot. Fellow sophomores Alec Holland and Declan Connolly will also be looking to make a big impact in the lineup for South.

Kicking off the middle portion of the lineup is senior Robert Generelli. Generelli bounced back nicely last season, after missing all of 2020 with an injury, by finishing 5th at the Regions. It was his 2nd trip to the Regions, as he qualified as a freshman during his 26-win season that saw him take 2nd at Districts. The run continues with a glut of talent rounding out the middle. Junior David Hussey advanced to States with a 3rd-place finish at Regions. It was the 2nd trip to States for Hussey, having advanced to AC in his 29-win freshman season in which he also won the D19 Championship. Senior, Travis Tuminelli is another Eagle who had a nice bounce back from an injury during his sophomore year, recording 10 wins and placing 6th at Regions. From 6-12 as a sophomore, to 11-4 and a 5th-place at Regions, senior Alex Quintano had a huge turnaround year in 2021, and will be looking to take it even further 2022. Adding to the talent and depth of this group are seniors Jason DeSanctis, Harry King, and Jack Nelson, who all have previous varsity experience.

Up top, he Eagles could put out a senior wrestler with Region experience at each of the weight classes from 165-Hwt. Jack Willi is a 2-time Region Qualifier, having qualified in each of the last two seasons. Same goes for 215-pounder Matt Cody, who made it last year, and also in 2020 while wrestling at heavyweight for RBC, where he placed 2nd at D22. Dante Miranda will be looking to make it back to back trips at heavyweight, while Nick Holland qualified in 2020 after placing 3rd at Districts.

Listen, I'm not ancient, but with a few year exception in the late 90's, I've been following Shore Conference wrestling fairly close for about 30 years (wow, I guess I did get old). With that said, I'm pretty confident that this is the best lineup from top to bottom the Eagles have had in that period of time. The team has talent, leadership, balance, and depth, and is gunning for big things in 2022. The schedule is solid with December trips to the Beast of the East, and Sam Cali Invitational tournaments. The dual schedule is tough and includes matches with Delsea and Paramus Catholic, two teams expected to begin the season ranked in the NJ Top 20, but the big dates to circle on the calendar are road trips to CBA on 1/12, and Howell on 1/19, which figure to be key duals South needs to win as they attempt to win their first divisional title since 1987.
