2022 Caseys Wrestling
Head Coach
Joe Gallagher - 15th Season (Career Record: 117-157)
With some big talent returning, including 2021 State runner-up Sabino Portella, some solid veterans, and a very promising cast of newcomers, the Caseys look to be primed for big things in 2022.
Down low, the Caseys have a number of freshmen they're excited about. It's a hard working group that are looking to make an immediate impact in the lineup for the Caseys. There will be some good senior leadership for them, with Trevor Learn and Ryan Brown. Learn is a 4-year starter for RBC, while Brown missed last season after starting his first two seasons. Sophomore Anthony Gaetano is back at 106, and will be looking to build off last year. He was a little undersized last season, but has grown into the weight in the offseason. The Caseys will also get a lift down at 106, when Noah Michaels, a Region Qualifier at Manalapan last year, joins the lineup.
In the middle, the Caseys have the Conroy brothers, Dan & Marco, projected to go back to back at 138 & 144, respectively. Dan, a senior, had a couple nice wins in the limited season last year, and is looking for a breakout year. Marco, a sophomore, has put a lot of work in during the offseason to step up in the lineup. Christian Ungemah, a junior, is a high energy wrestler looking for a big year in 2022. Junior Rob Muscio and sophomore VJ Muscillo will be at the back end of this group looking to help solidify the middle.
The upperweights look to be a real strength for RBC this season. Obviously, the big name returning is junior Sabino Portella. Portella is a 2-time Region Champ, and made a run at becoming the Caseys' 2nd State Champion in program history, ultimately finishing in 2nd-place. He is focused and set at reaching the top spot on the podium in Atlantic City this March. Joining Portella up top is fellow junior Michael Palmieri, a Region Qualifier last season, and a 24-match winner as a freshman in 2020. Davin Brewton was a Region Qualifier in his rookie season last year. A tremendous athlete with a great combo of size and speed, the sophomore is looking towards big things in 2022. Rounding out the upperweights are senior Chris Holt and sophomore Lorenzo Portella, two physical linemen from the Caseys' football program. The team is excited to see both wrestlers at heavyweight, especially the young Portella, who could make them set at heavyweight for the next three years.
With some solid talent, and healthy numbers in the room giving them lineup flexibility, this is as good a shape as the RBC wrestling program has been in a very long time. With all the young guys down low, and the football players getting adjusted after their late running State Championship season, the team expects to get better and better as the season rolls on. If everything comes along for the Caseys, this is a team that has a chance to crack the Top 10 11, and can be a very tough out.
