2025 Toms River South Indians
Head Coach: Ron Laycock (27th Season)
Assistants: Candy Blake, Cole Corrigan, Kevin Corrigan, Zach Martin, Vinnie Pedalino, Jeff Gauthier , Larry Vacca
2024 Record: 8-11
With a solid group of returners, and a very promising crop of freshmen, the Indians should be a team on the rise with the talent they have in the room and lineup depth and maneuverability they have not had in recent years.
150-up could be a huge strength for South, with six starters returning. Senior Caden Langan, who enters the season needing just 10 wins to reach 100 for his career, is a 3-time District medal winner, and was a win away from Atlantic City last season after placing 5th at Regions. Fellow senior Mike Devivi went from an 0-5 sophomore season to 19 wins and a Region 7 berth after finishing 2nd at Districts in what was a tremendous breakout season. Senior Chris Farrant and junior Brett Rankin will be lgunning for Region bids this season after both finishing 4th at last year's Districts. Senior Phil Bentivegna was 4th at Districts as a freshman and a sophomore, but did not wrestle in the post season due to injury. He's another strong candidate for a trip to the Regions this season. Sophomore Finn Devrous should make an impact as a starter this year after going 5-2 in limited varisty action this season, while junior heavyweight Austin Reed will look to step up after getting varsity experience last season.
There's a lot more experience returning in the bottom half of the lineup as well, with five starters back. Owen Beneciuk leads the charge, coming off a 30-win season in 2024, giving the junior 53 wins through his first two seasons. Beneciuk advanced to Regions last year after placing 2nd at the Districts. He's joined by seniors Ian Torres and Aiden Hanlon, and sophomores Jon Correa and Ronan Lindeman as a solid core in which head coach can break some of the promising freshmen into the lineup, including Vinnie Pedalino, Alex Park, Cullen Burr, and Jake Gallagher.
South hasn't had a shortage of talent over the years, but what has hurt them in the dual season in the past has been a lack of overall depth and flexibility with the lineup. With good balance and numbers throughout the lineup, the Indians should be a team on the rise this season as they do battle in the new F-Division against Keansburg, Freehold Boro, Manalapan, and old A-South rival Brick Twp, in their bid for their first divisional title since 2013.
