Shore Stuff

 Asbury Park  -  Champs: 8 (Last: 2018)  /  Team Titles: 0

Top 4 Seeds
1st: Iquann Crawford (Hwt)
2nd: Amando Herrera (120)
4th: Luckenson Altidor (144)

Since the resurrection of the program in 2007, the Blue Bishops have had 4 District Champions. All of those championships were won at the heavyweight class. Does top-seeded senior Iquann Crawford make it 5?

If the seeds hold, the Bishops will have multiple finalists and medal winners for the first time since 2017.

 Brick Memorial  -  Champs: 199 (Last: 2023)  /  Streak: 41 Seasons  /  Team Titles: 32 (Last: 2023)

Top 4 Seeds
1st: Michael Napolitano (113) / Gavin Martin (120) / Trey Tallmadge (165) / Harvey Ludington (190) / Ben Szuba (215)
2nd: Mason Pirnik (157)
3rd: Sonny DiMatteo (106) / Thomas Prince (138) / Jack Torre (144)
4th: Kson Young (126) / Ryan Henderson (132)

In 1981, the Brick Memorial wrestling program participated in the Districts for the first time. They did not have a champion. That has not happened again. Since Year Two of the program, the Stangs have had a District Champion every season, for a Shore Conference record 41 straight seasons. That streak continuing is a pretty safe wager, but there is a bit of intrigue in that whoever wins the first title for the Stangs will go down as the program's 200th District Champion, which will have the Stangs join rival Jackson Memorial as the only Shore Conference programs with 200 District Champions.

 Brick Twp  -  Champs: 64 (Last: 2020)  /  Team Titles: 0

Top 4 Seeds
3rd: Lucas D'Elia (113) / Travis Trempy (165) / William Walsh (Hwt)
4th: Ricky Gordillo (120) / Joseph Leskowski (138)

The Dragons have a trio of #3 seeds, which puts them in position to have 3 or more District medal winners for the 3rd straight season. As for getting their first champ since 2020? Heavyweight William Walsh may be the best shot. The senior has split time at 215 and heavyweight this year and picked up a few nice wins along the way that puts him in play here. Also keep an eye on freshman Lucas D'Elia, the team leader in wins, who rolls into the postseason on a hot streak having won his last 16 matches.

 Manasquan  -  Champs: 26 (Last: 2004)  /  Team Titles: 1 (1979)

Top 4 Seeds
1st: Michael O'Connor (138)
2nd: Shane Kerstetter (106) / Michael McNulty (150) / Noah Mammeri (190)
3rd: Charlie Hunt (126) / Brian Lee (175)
4th: Nico Princiotta (113)

The Warriors have not had a District Champion since Todd Rinaldo won in 2004. They currently have the longest drought in the Shore Conference. Is this the year? One thing they do have that they have not had too frequently during this period is a #1 seed. They do have one this season in junior Michael O'Connor. O'Connor, a runner-up last season, led the Warriors with a 28-2 record during the regular season. He finished 3rd at the Shore Conference Tournament, defeating the #2 seed in this weight class, Parker Quinn of Wall, in that 3rd-place match.

The Warriors had 3 medal winners lasts season for the first time since 2005, a big step forward for a program that had gone through some rough years. All things are pointing towards an even bigger step this year.

 Neptune  -  Champs: 73 (Last: 2023)  /  Streak: 1 Season  /  Team Titles: 6 (Last: 1986)

Top 4 Seeds
2nd: Thomas Drea (132)
3rd: Jarairya Jean (215)

The Scarlet Fliers crowned their first champion since 2017 at last year's tournament when since-graduated Quincy Esannason scored an overtime takedown to win the 157-pound title at District 23. They have not had back-to-back seasons with multiple District medalists since the 2018 & 2019 seasons, but have a shot at that this year with returning 3rd-place finisher Thomas Drea seeded 2nd at 132, and sophomore Jarairya Jean seeded 3rd at 215.

 Ocean Township  -  Champs: 114 (Last: 2022)  /  Team Titles: 18 (Last: 2020)

Top 4 Seeds
1st: Justin Penta (106) / Steven Perez (126) / Dom Volek (132) / James Farina (150) / Michael Poniros (175)
2nd: Boomer Volek (144) / Daniel Farina (215)
4th: Josh Calixte (157) / Abi Andre (Hwt)

The Spartans had a streak of 18 consecutive seasons with a District Champion snapped last year. Armed with 5 #1 seeds and a pair of #2's, they look to start a new one in 2024.

Ocean is tied with Brick Memorial for most #1 seeds with five each. Senior James Farina, who recorded his 100th career victory last week, is a 3-time State Qualifier, but is still searching for his first District Title. He is the strong favorite to finally get that title, especially after Wall's Donovan DiStefano, a 2-time District Champ that Farina beat in the SCT Finals this year, went down to 144 for the postseason.

The other top seeds for the Big Red are senior Michael Poniros, a runner-up last season, sophomores Justin Penta and Steven Perez, who both placed 4th last year, and freshman Dom Volek, who will try and become the Spartans' first freshman District Champion since Demetri Poniros in 2018.

 Pt Beach  -  Champs: 39 (Last: 2020)  /  Team Titles: 0

Top 4 Seeds
2nd: Connor Loughran (165) / Marcos Kaiafas (Hwt)
3rd: Luke DeBenedett (132) / Jude Bowers (150) / Sam Yedman (157)
4th: Christian Torres (215)

The Gulls had a pair of 2nd and a pair of 3rd's at last year's District Tournament, giving the Shore's smallest public school 4 or more District medal winners for the 6th time in 7 years. With a pair of #2 seeds, three #3's, and a 4th, the Gulls have a great shot at making it 7 out of 8 years this season.

 Shore Regional  -  Champs: 30 (Last: 2022)  /  Team Titles: 0

Top 4 Seeds
3rd: Jack Stetter (190)
4th: Trevor Doremus (106) / Domenic Sciarappa (150) / Cole Torres (165) / Lucas White (175)

The Blue Devils had a program record of 5 straight seasons with a District Champion snapped last season. They did have 4 medal winners though, making it 10 years in a row with multiple medal winners. They have a #3 seed in Jack Stetter, so if he holds seed, there's one, but they'd need someone else to break seed to keep the streak alive.

 Wall  -  Champs: 135 (Last: 2023)  /  Streak: 10 Seasons  /  Team Titles: 9 (Last: 2020)

Top 4 Seeds
1st: Donovan DiStefano (144) / Jeremy Marsella (157)
2nd: Omar Carrillo-Solano (113) / Ben Waitzel (126) / Quinn Parker (138) / Nicholas Wonsala (175)
3rd: Charles Mahoney (120)
4th: Sean Cosme (190)

Senior Donovan DiStefano, a 2-time District and Region Champion who has twice been one win away from a medal at States, who wrestled up at 150 & 157, and even saw a couple matches at 165, is down to 144 for the first time this year. DiStefano and freshman Jeremy Marsella give the Knights a pair of #1 seeds, to go along with 4 #2 seeds as the Crimson Knights look to make it 11 seasons in a row with multiple District Champions.
