2022 Cougars Wrestling

Head Coach
Brett Jankos - 10th Season (Career Record: 140-68)

Where They Open
12/17: TCNJ Pride Tournament at Middletown South

The Cougars are another team that took a ding to graduation, losing five wrestlers who qualified for the postseason, including a pair of State Tournament participants. Still, they have a solid senior class returning looking to have big individual seasons, while helping to lead the team to back-to-back B-North titles.

Down low, the Cougars are a bit of a work in progress, but they do have senior Michael Lyristis returning. Lyristis, a 4-year starter, is a 3-time Region Qualifier, with his biggest season coming in 2020, when he won 27 bouts on his way to winning a District Title and placing 5th at Regions. They will rely on him heavily as they break in new starters to fill the other four slots down low. Among the candidates to crack the lineup is junior Joe Zamorski, who got 11 matches in as a frosh in 2020.

Three starters return in the middle of the lineup for the Cougars, led by senior Eli Novoselov. Novoselov may have flown under the radar a bit behind some of the big names in the lineup over the years, but he is a 2-time Region Qualifier, and is a very solid wrestler capable of having yet another strong season. Sophomore Tyler Russ is looking to build on a very good rookie season. Russ had a couple very nice wins last year, and it would have been interesting to see what he could have done in a full season. Keep an eye on him here. Junior DJ Willis has 25 varsity matches to his credit in his first two seasons, and will be looking to step up this season to help solidify the middle.

CNeck's most experience lies in the upperweights. At heavyweight, they have perhaps their biggest gun in the lineup, senior Matt Jannucci. Jannucci has shown great improvement with each season, and after qualifying for the States last year, he will have his sights set on a spot on the Boardwalk Hall podium in March. Also back for the Cougars up top is 4-year starter Ford Zajac, a 2-time Region Qualifier who would likely be making a run at 100 career victories this season if it weren't for last year's shortened campaign. The upperweights also get a nice boost with the return of Joe Cilea to the roster after missing the last two seasons. The senior won 12 bouts as a freshmen, and could provide a big spark in the lineup. Adding to the upperclass depth are returning starters Joe Layton and Ben Rosen, both juniors, as well as fellow junior Abdalla Dewedar, and seniors Eric Abbud and Dylan Murphy.

Colts Neck has some solid talent returning. They should be very tough up top, and have that solid run with Lyristis, Novoselov, and Russ at 132-144. The key to how much success in the dual season they can have may be just how much they can get out of their lowerweights. The schedule is pretty solid and includes the season opening TCNJ Open, and the Mustang Classic for their December tournaments. As for the duals, we circle 1/12 on the calendar as the Cougars visit Wall in a dual that could very well decide the B-North Champion.
