2022 Griffins Wrestling
Head Coach
Lex Knapp - 1st Season
Where They Open
12/17: Home Dual vs. Central Regional
Former Lacey standout, and Rutgers University wrestler, Lex Knapp takes over for Steve Glawson, who had a nice run in his five seasons, guiding the Griffins to three Sectional Final appearances. Knapp's first season sees him with a pretty good mix to his roster. There are some seniors capable of big seasons, a couple solid transfers that give the lineup an immediate boost, and promising crop of frosh looking to make an immediate impact in the lineup.
Down low, the Griffins get a big jolt to the room with the arrival of Kurt Wehner. Wehner had a big rookie campaign at Toms River East last season, finishing 4th in the Super Region to advance to the State Tournament. He's a strong contender to reach the podium in AC this March, and gives Donovan a legit hammer in their lineup. Beyond what Wehner will bring to the lineup, he's also a big addition to the wrestling room, as he'll only make the rest of the lowerweights around him, which will be comprised entirely of underclassmen, better. Among those underclassmen, keep an eye on freshman Dezmond Lenaghan, who won multiple State Medals at the youth level.
The middleweights have a nice mix to them. Senior, Gaige Rebmann enters his 4th season in the varsity lineup, and could have a breakout year in his final run. Joining the squad is junior Richard Davis, who arrives from St. Joseph's of Metuchen, where he qualified for the Regions last season. Rebmann and Davis provide a nice veteran presence in the middle where the Griffins have a couple more very promising frosh entering the lineup in Brody Kountouris and Riley Gutierrez. If the latter's name sounds familiar to you, Riley is the brother of former Lacey standout Hunter Gutierrez.
Up top, senior Levi Wilkins leads the charge for DC. The 4-year starter was a Region Qualifier last season, and would likely be making a run at 100 career wins this season if it weren't for last year's abbreviated season. He's joined by fellow seniors, Andrew Gallegos, also entering his 4th season as a starter, and the returning Harrison Fodor, who missed the 2021 campaign. At heavyweight, Chris Poskay is a promising sophomore who the Griffins will be excited to get into the lineup, after he missed last year due to injury.
With the arrival of Knapp as head coach, the additions of proven talent in Wehner and Davis, some good veteran leadership, and a very promising batch of freshmen, there's a lot to be excited about in 2022 for the Griffins. Due to injury and COVID-concerns, Donovan pretty much competed all of last year with just a half a lineup. That shouldn't be the case this year as it looks like they'll be able to put a full lineup on the mat. As a result, goals are high, and the team will look to take another shot at capturing their first Sectional Title, while also developing and improving the influx of young talent in the room as the program looks to build itself up towards big things.
