Where They Open
12/18: Home Quad w/ Keyport, Highland Park, & JP Stevens
Seven starters return from last year's team, and a host of freshmen are expected to fill out the remainder of the lineup, as the Titans look to do battle in B-Central.
From 106-138, the Titans will be extremely young. 3rd-year starter David Esquilin, a junior, is the only wrestler on the roster with a varsity experience. He'll be looked upon to provide some veteran leadership to the young group cracking the lineup. Although some of them have ended up at other schools, the feeder program has provided some quality wrestlers over the recent years. The hope here will be that this freshman group that has come up through the ranks can step in and contribute immediately.
Keansburg returns the bulk of their experience from 144-up. The Titans have a pair of 4th-year starters in this stretch with Michael Morro, who was undefeated last season at a clean 7-0, and heavyweight Keyshawn Coppinger Ward. Ward went from 2 wins in 2019, to 14 wins in 2020. It would have been interesting to see how much further he improved last season, but unfortunately the shortened season put a hold on things. He has the ability to have a real force for the Titans in the heavyweight slot. The Titans also have a trio of juniors entering their 3rd season in the starting lineup in Ian Mendez, Bill Huhn, and Riley Jankowski. Both Mendez, who tied for the team lead in wins last season, and Jankowski were double digit winners in 2021. Those five upperclassmen, along with sophomore Gilbert Gaspar, who got some varsity action last season, provide a strong foundation to break in some new faces around. Among those new faces are freshmen Jayden Johnson and Joey Mascolino.
The Titans should have a really good stretch of the lineup from 144-Hwt, that is going to rack up some wins. The key for dual success is going to be how much they get out of the frosh class, and the ability to stay healthy. There's a good group here that is looking to be competitive with their B-Central rivals, and pick up wins against all the programs of similar size to them. If they do stay healthy, and the youngsters hit the ground running, the Titans should be able to pick up a solid chunk of wins.
