2022 Warriors Wrestling
Head Coach
Justin Barowski - 2nd Season (Career Record: 9-6)
Where They Open
12/18: IceBreaker Tournament at Old Bridge
Year one for Manasquan under coach Justin Barowski was nothing short of a huge success. It was the first time since 2006 that the Warriors finished with a winning record, and their 9 wins was also the most for the program since that same year. Year two sees the team with healthy numbers consisting of a nice mix of experience and promising newcomers, as the program looks to continue its upward trajectory.
The middle of the lineup looks like it should be the strength. Leading the charge is senior David Lisk, a 4-year starter who has qualified for the Regions in each of the previous two seasons. Also back in the middle for Squan is sophomore Max Salerno, who is coming off a solid rookie campaign that saw him share the team lead for wins last season with Lisk. Despite the short season of last year, Salerno's 12 wins was the most for a Manasquan since the 2018 season. The senior trio of Jake Edwards, Jose Avila, and Kieran Pastelak also return in the middle for the Warriors, giving the group some pretty good depth. Pastelak and Avila have been in the lineup since their freshmen seasons, while Edwards is entering his 3rd season as a starter.
Three returning senior starters lead the way in the upperweights for Squan. Frank Loria is the most experienced of the group, having seen time in the lineup since his freshman season. JJ Cavanaugh could be primed for a big year up at heavy for the Warriors, while Edward Dingler looks to build off the experience he gained from his first season in the lineup last year. There's a good number of underclassmen in this group as well, that will compete for time in the lineup around the seniors.
There's a few weights open down low that several underclassmen will compete for an opportunity to crack the lineup. With all the youth, the Warriors will look to returning starters James Bonavita and Torey Falkinburg to provide leadership to a very young group.
The Warriors took a big step forward in 2021 with their first winning season in 15 years. Just as important was that they were able to fill 13 of the 14 weight classes, after having several empty weight classes in 2020. This season it looks like they should be able to fill all 14, which will help tremendously as they look to continue to move the program in the right direction. Individually, they have some legit talent in the lineup capable of having big seasons, especially in Lisk and Salerno, and some lineup veterans looking for big years in their final go around.
