Head Coach
Matt Hughes - 1st Season
Where They Open
12/18: IceBreaker Tournament at Old Bridge
Matt Hughes takes over as head coach for former coach Mike Mason, who is now an assistant at Jackson Memorial, as the Huskies look to continue their winning ways, despite losing some big pieces from the lineup to graduation, and having a lot of new faces in the lineup.
Matawan has three wrestlers with varsity experience in the lower portion of the lineup, with two of them coming off great seasons. Junior Ricky Gomez followed his 24-win freshman season with an outstanding sophomore campaign that saw him advance to the State Tournament after finishing 4th in the Region. Sophomore Lawrence Liss went 7-1 in his debut season, splitting time at 106/113, but unfortunately did not receive a Region invite behind a loaded field that had previous postseason criteria that edged him out. These two give Matawan a very solid 1-2 punch down low. The other wrestler down low with varsity experience is junior Ryan Liou, who got seven matches in as a freshman in 2020.
4th-year starter Damiano Rotolo will anchor the middle portion of the lineup. The senior is a returning Region Qualifier who is capable of having a big year on the mat, while also providing leadership as the veteran in the room. Several newcomers are working to crack the lineup here, among them is promising freshman Colin Palumbo, who enters the program after a very successful run at the intermediate level.
Up top, seniors Jonathan Velsor and Ahmad Hassan have both been in the lineup since their freshman seasons, and junior Gavin Patino wrestled up at 182 as a starter last season. They'll be looked upon to provide some stability in the upperweights, as several new faces look to break into the lineup.
The Huskies have some solid pieces returning in the lineup, but are a pretty young group overall, and will be breaking in a lot of new faces to the lineup. The team is looking for improvement from the returners, while developing the newcomers in the room, and looking to grow the program.
