2025 Toms River East Raiders

Head Coach: Steven Giannios (1st Season)
Assistants: Warren Reid / Mark Gray
Volunteer: Freddy Pontoriero / Jim Lynch
2024 Record: 5-14

For the first time since the program was established in 1980, Toms River East has a new head coach. Steven Giannios, a former standout wrestler for St John Vianney, and nephew of arguably the greatest coach in Shore Conference Wrestling history, Tony Caravella (the architect behind the Brick Memorial dynasty of the 80's & 90s'), takes over for legendary coach Warren Reid. Coach Reid won't be going too far away though, as he is staying on as an assistant.

Giannios takes over a very young team that has a lot of underclassmen in the room competing for the chance to make an impact in the lineup. While the room is young, he has a senior hammer at the very top of the lineup in heavyweight James Lynch. Lynch enters the year with 93 career victories and is coming off a junior season in which he went 39-2, with his only two defeats coming in Atlantic City where he placed 7th at heavyweight. Also returning up top for the Raiders is another senior, Terrence Thomas. Thomas had a breakout junior season, picking up 25 wins on his way to a 3rd-place finish at Districts. Lynch and Thomas give TRE a strong veteran presence in an otherwise pretty young room.

Down low, sophomore Ricky DeLorenzo was one of the top 106-pounders in the Shore 2024. DeLorenzo was off to a fantastic start, including placing 3rd at the Shore Conference Tournament and winning the Hunterdon Central Invitational, before suffering an injury. He came back for the postseason at less than 100%, but still managed to take 2nd at Districts and finishing 6th at Regions. Fellow sophomore Kevin Sickler also returns down low for the Raiders. Sickler won 15 matches in his rookie campaign and advanced to the Region 7 Tournament after finishing 3rd at Districts.

As mentioned, it is a very young room for East this year, so DeLorenzo and Sickler down low, and Lynch and Thomas up top will be looked to provide some leadership for all the new faces. Among the crop of newcomers in the room to keep an eye on, freshman Jayce Cappello enters the program after a successful run at the middle school level, culminating with a 6th-place finish at the Intermediate School State Tournament.

Rebuilding in the old A-South would certainly be a bit of a headache when it was at its peak. It became hard to get momentum rolling when the reality checks of Southern, Brick Memorial, Jackson, etc. walked into the gym and would put up some rather numbers on the scoreboard. With the new division formats, East moves into the E-Division. While they still have heavy hitters on the schedule, the battle for a divisional crown is wide open with the Raiders matched up with Manasquan, Red Bank, Central, and Middletown South, and increases the number of high stakes duals for young programs that don't often get those opportunities when stuck in a division with a lot of hammers.
